Syttende Mai

In 1814, Norway’s Constitution was signed in Eidsvoll, declaring its independence from Denmark, although full independence wouldn’t happen until 1905, as it entered into a personal union with Sweden shortly after the signing. The first official celebration of 17. mai (Grunnlovsdagen) actually took place in Denmark. At the time, the former Norwegian interim king, Christian Frederik was exiled to Denmark to serve as General Governor of Fyn (he would later serve as the King of Denmark). While there, he organized the first celebration of 17. mai in 1815.

In the 1820s, King Karl Johan actually banned the celebration of 17. mai for a number of years. He considered the celebration as a sort of protest to the union that Norway was in with Sweden. In 1829, however, there was a fight between some Norwegian demonstrators and forces of the United Kingdoms of Sweden and Norway, in (what is now known as) Oslo. This “Battle of the Square” led to King Karl Johan lifting the ban on the 17. mai celebrations.

Today, celebrations begin in many areas with speeches to commemorate notable Norwegians and laying of wreaths, in the morning. Later in the day celebrations include children’s parades; wearing traditional clothing (bunads) or wearing red, white and blue; eating hot dogs, ice cream, cakes, and drinking coffee. During the parades, the older children carry full-size Norwegian flags and the younger children carry smaller flags; the schools’ marching bands play, and people often sing “Ja, vi elsker dette landet,” (considered the national anthem) and the royal anthem, “Kongesangen.”
